The causes for pelvic organ prolapse can vary, but include the weakening of pelvic musculature and ligaments, traumatic vaginal delivery and chronic straining in association with coughing or bowel movements.
This condition tends to worsen over time, so discuss your symptoms it with a gynecologist or urogynecologist. A physical exam is the first step in diagnosing the type and severity of pelvic organ prolapse. Other types of testing are available including imaging such as MRI, ultrasound and cystoscopy, or bladder function testing.
